IEI General Contractors earns 2nd Historical Preservation Award

AGC of Wisconsin recognizes leading commercial contractor for building renovation

IEI General Contractors, Inc. is rapidly establishing itself as a leading commercial contractor in exquisite historical building renovation after receiving its second Historical Preservation Award in three years from the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Wisconsin.

In partnership with Immel Construction, IEI was recognized by the AGC of Wisconsin for its work on transforming an old Door County highway shop in Sturgeon Bay into the new Door County Community Center. The building renovation provides a new home for the Aging and Disability Resource Center  (ADRC) and Door County Emergency Services Department.

The project earned the 2018 Historical Preservation Award from the AGC of Wisconsin, two years after IEI received the 2016 award for its work on the Chase Stone Barn in Oconto County. IEI is a leading commercial contractor in northeast Wisconsin, providing new construction, remodeling and renovation services for business, municipal and educational clients.

Historical preservation from leading commercial contractor featured cleaning of original façade

Historical preservation and building renovation of the 80-year-old Door County highway shop featured both structural and cosmetic challenges. The primary goals included minimizing material replacement needs and restoring the historic building materials wherever possible. IEI served as commercial contractor on the project, and its crews completed some of the tasks associated with the historical preservation and building renovation.

Crews from IEI made repairs to the wooden trusses of the old shop, while its masonry team skillfully blended new stone work with the existing building stone so as not to look like a patch. Other exterior restoration work included tuck-pointing, roof replacement and repair of the exterior shell.

The IEI team was able to retain the original punched window openings and upgraded the windows themselves with energy-efficient glazing in historic mullion patterns. New windows installed between the existing concrete buttresses allow for natural light, transparency to programs and views looking out onto the new exterior deck event space. The old truck garage space was transformed beautifully into a new dining hall completing the renovation project.
